Default In Justify why does inserted text sometimes replace existing text

Sometimes, when I'm writing in Justify mode and I want to insert a work or
other text, the word I'm inserting REPLACES other text rather than just
inserting it. Can anyone tell me why and how do I avoid this? Thanks!
