I try to insert a letter or word but it writes over the next word

You're in Overtype mode. You toggle between Insert and Overtype modes
[usually] by pressing the Insert key. If that doesn't work, look for the
OVR indicator in the status bar, and double-click it to switch to Insert
mode (or, if you're using Word 2007, click on Overtype in the status bar to
switch to Insert mode).
