Search and replace - how to
How do I do a replace all the instances of ‘* written in MS Mincho (MS 明æœ)
with the same symbol in Arial Unicode MS? This is critical because I can't give my customers documents with Japanese symbols. I've had this problem since Word 2003. There are other problems like black dots I can't change. I assume it's the same issue. |

Search and replace - how to
Use Replace (Ctrl+H) to search for the font type, under More, Format, Font on
the Replace dialog, and replace with either changing the font to something else and/or the EnclosedAlphaNumeric. You can use the copy function to capture the Find and the Replace characters, ensure you don't have Match case and/or Wildcards selected as these could restrict your search. I don't have MS Mincho, but have doen a test with someother "odd" fonts and it does work. Is the problem with "black dots" the Non-Printing Characters issue? ie Ctrl+Shft+8 toggles them on and off? see: http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Format...PrintChars.htm Hope this helps DeanH "Benjamin Barrett" wrote: How do I do a replace all the instances of ‘* written in MS Mincho (MS 明æœ) with the same symbol in Arial Unicode MS? Thanks, but that doesn't work. The characters remain in MS Mincho. This is my
problem. I have to manually change each one. Search and replace - how to
Are you saying that the Find/Replace will not Find the font or it will find
it but not replace it? If the Find will find the font (which all my tests do) but the Replace will not replace it (which mine does), then try this for a semi-auto replace, set Find to find the font, Find Next, in the document manually change the font to what you require. Then use the "Find Next" down arrow (bottom right corner of the Word window, underneath the vertical scroll bar) this should take you to the next occurrence, press F4 to apply the font change, then repeat the Find Next arrows, F4, repeat. A bit quicker but I am surprised that the Replace will not do the Font change. Hope this helps DeanH "Benjamin Barrett" wrote: Thanks, but that doesn't work. The characters remain in MS Mincho. Search and replace - how to
Hi Benjamin,
WHen you use the replace dialog and click on More=Formatting=Fonts do you have just a 'font' line, or do you also have choices for 'Asian Text' and for 'Complex Scripts' for different fonts? How were these characters inserted (and in which version)? If they're 'enclosed' characters, they're likely Word equation {EQ} fields rather than single characters. If this is the case you can see the underlying codes by using Alt+F9. Formatting with Arial Unicode MS will work (hopefully the other folks you're sending to have that font installed) but its sizing of the enclose outlines for the characters may not work correctly. ============ "Benjamin Barrett" wrote in message ... Search and replace - how to
Thank you, Dean. Your method works. Manual and slow when there are a lot of
characters, but it works. In response to your follow-up question, Word finds and even claims to have replaced X number of items, but nothing is changed in the document. Search and replace - how to
Hi Bob,
Thank you for the response. There are two choices for fonts. One for Asian text font, one for just "font". So in the replace source, I select MS Mincho (written in Japanese to match the name of the font), and in the replace to, I select Arial Unicode MS. When I run the replace all, Word tells me how many it replaced, but nothing in fact is changed. As for creating symbols within a circle using an EQ, these are not. They are single characters. If you look in the subset of Arial Unicode MS, there is a section called "enclosed alphanumerics". These are very common characters in Japanese, and my client requires I provide the single-byte version of them, which is not available in TNR, so I use Arial Unicode MS.
