To edit in Word I usually use the method whereby i color in with mouse a text
portion and overtype. Somehow I have turned this ability off and cant find
where to turn it back on.

Tools Options Edit check "Typing replaces selection".

Thanks, it now overtypes, but still cant color in with mouse a text
portion and delete. Can you help on that one?

Tools | Options | General: Clear the check boxes for both options that refer
to WordPerfect. Also, FWIW, this is called "selecting," not "coloring in."
