Default After upgrading to Word 2003, I cannot open old files!

I just upgraded to Word 2003 and am now unable to open/modify my previous
documents! How can I grant myself permission to do this?

Upgrading to Word 2003 should not cause this. Exactly what happens (message
displayed?) when you try and open one of the documents?
