Default Word tells me I should remove some fonts. How?

Before a word document opens for me, I get a message that I have more than
500 fonts and that I should remove some of them. That would be fine with me.
But how can it be done?

Start Control Panel Fonts. Select and delete.

So what's with this "more than 500 fonts" message? I don't get near
that number because I ruthlessly prune display and text fonts I have
no use for (not discard, but deactivate and put in a storage folder),
but your article says that even in early, limited versions, 1000-1500
fonts would work!

I suspect it has to do with the system resources. The older the system, and
the less available space on the HD, the more likely you are to get any sort
of error message. Or the message may be totally bogus. Also, as indicated,
in earlier versions of Windows, the limitation was on the aggregate length
of the filename and path. On my previous system, my profile was named
"Suzanne S. Barnhill." On the current system, it's just "Suzanne." (In
neither case was this my choice--just the way the OS set it up.) It's easy
to see that the former would result in longer file paths.

I have a folder of Available Fonts--all the fonts copied from the previous
system--which I install as needed.
