Default Cannot save template as a document

I'm using MS Word 2000. When I open a read-only template and attempt to save
it as a document, the "Save As Type" option only allows me to save it as a
..dot or template. I've gone into the options and made sure the default
option for "Save Word files as" is set to "Word document" but I still have
this problem. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

That isn't a "problem", it's the way it's supposed to work. A template is a
template forever.

If you want a document based on the template, use File New and select the
template in the dialog.
