Default Tab to the end of line

I am printing address labels and need to place a code at the end of a line
so the result would be 'abc xyz' spread across the width of the
label. An ordinary tab will not do this when abc is of variable length. I
would be grateful for help please. Thanks.

A right-aligned tab stop for the "xyz" part should do what you want.
Set it in FormatTabs.

And then you use Ctrl+Tab to insert a tab into the cell of a table (which is
what a label is)

Hope this helps.
