Default Formatting in Word

An unintended indent appears in mid-sentences which resume at the top of some
pages. Also, page numbers appear at both the top and bottom of pages. Can't
choose top OR bottom for their placement.

Don't use Insert Page Numbers. Ever.
Use headers and footers instead. View Header and Footer...
You may want to refresh your normal.dot if every document is like this.
Doing so will help with new documents only.

Unintended indent, space, sounds like a product of the click-and-type
"feature." Tools Options Edit
uncheck "Click-and-type."

For the indents, see
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/Format...lyIndented.htm.

I'm not sure what the problem is with the page numbers, but it's
probably caused by using the brain-dead Insert Page Number command.
Instead, delete the page numbers that are there, and use the Page
Number button in the Header/Footer toolbar. The latter inserts the
Page field as regular text directly in the header or footer, wherever
the cursor is at the time you click. The page I pointed to explains
what the Insert Page Number does and why it's good to avoid it.

I deleted the headers, and the problem, together with the unwanted page #s at
top, disappeared. However, on one page there is still a long indent which I
haven't been able to remove. Still working on it. Obviously, it's a
function of the header feature.

It is almost certainly an empty frame referred to in the article that
Suzanne wrote. Try, within the header view pressing Ctrl-A and then delete.
If that doesn't fix the problem, try doing the same thing in the footer.

In addition, I find that displaying text boundaries makes it much easier to
troubleshoot this type of problem.
