Turning Off Spelling/Grammar Checking
We have a weekly Word document that is placed on our web site. Because
it contains text and graphics, Word gets confused and thinks there are grammar errors each week. So we manually have to go through the document and indicate ignore, ignore, ignore... for each error until the 'squigglys' are gone. When the Word doc is placed on the web site, no one viewing the web site will see the squigglys which is what we want. It would be nice (in this case) to be able to tell Word's Spelling/Grammar checkers that everything is okay without going through the 'ignore' process. Even if I hide all the errors and I don't see them, others accessing the web site will see them unless the errors are ignored/corrected. Can the Spelling/Grammar checkers be set somehow without the manual intervention we're doing? Thanks, Sheldon Potolsky |

Tools | Options | Spelling & Grammar | Deselect check grammar with spelling.
If you do not want it spell checked at all - Tools | Language | Set Language | Do not check spelling or grammar. -- Carol A. Turning Off Spelling/Grammar Checking
I had tried both options previously but without success. Even after I
deselected the grammar and spelling checking, another person opening the document would still see the squigglys. And when I went through the Tools | Language | Set Language option and clicked on the checkbox, after I closed the document and reopened it (I'm using Word 2000), that option was unchecked again. You have to change the language option with all your text selected. It is
like turning it bold or a different color. -- Charles Kenyon Word New User FAQ & Web Directory: http://addbalance.com/word Intermediate User's Guide to Microsoft Word (supplemented version of Microsoft's Legal Users' Guide) http://addbalance.com/usersguide See also the MVP FAQ: http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/ which is awesome! --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- --------- This message is posted to a newsgroup. Thanks to all that responded so quickly and thank you Charles for
pointing out that I needed to change the language option with all my text selected. That was the piece of the "puzzle" that I was missing. Shedon Potolsky |

On the Spelling & Grammar tab of Tools | Options, check the boxes for "Hide
spelling/grammatical errors in this document." This hid the "squigglys" from my view but not from others who opened the document. Charles' suggestion was the one that worked. Sheldon Potolsky |

Since that setting is saved with the document, it should have affected the
display on anyone's computer *provided that the document was actually saved.* If you did not make any other changes in the document after changing this setting, it may not have been saved. It does *not* prevent a user from running a spelling or grammar check manually, but it does prevent "Check spelling/grammar as you type" from displaying. -- Suzanne S.
