Word opens as normal, with a selected document from file. After a few key
presses, the screen goes blank (black) and the computer reboots. The document
is recovered automatically. there is no invitation to report the error to
Microsoft.

Is the heat-wave effecting my compter?

well.. try to open the casing,
and see if you can work longer with no reboot..
i could be heat indeed

Unless the same thing occurs with all your apps. it is unlikely to be
overheating and removing the case will destroy the air flow so is not
necessarily recommended - other than to check for fluff and dust and
non-rotating fans.
