Default possible to have a linked autonumber field?

Hi
I'm writing a document that has numbered examples. Since I don't know what
the final order of the examples will be, I'm numbering them with the
autonumber field. Now, when I refer to the example, I use the number. Is
there anyway to insert another autonumber field that will be linked to the
one which numbers the example, so that if I move things around, the numbering
will update throughout references to the example.

So what I mean is something like the following:
+++++++++
Paragraph I:
Example [1 -- autonumber]
In example (1), we find evidence.

Paragraph II:
Example [2 -- autonumber]
In example (2), we find more evidence than in example (1).
++++++++++
If I move the second paragraph before the first one, then my sentence in
paragraph II will refer to the wrong examples. Example (1) will be (2) due to
the autonumbering update, but the numbers in the sentence won't update. I
have to go back and change the references manually. Is there any way to link
them such that they will update automatically?

I appreciate any advice, b/c the help file and online I only found
references to linking to objects external to the document.

Insert | Reference | Cross Reference.

I think it would be: Reference type: Numbered item; Reference to:
Paragraph Number.

You'll have to select and hit F9 to Update Fields for the
cross-references to update as the original numbers change.

hi, many thanks,
you got me on the right track. you're answer doesn't completely solve the
problem b/c i have many paragraphs before the examples, and in between, so
the paragraph number didn't do the trick.

but, if I first put the autonumber for each example, and then I make a
bookmark on the autonumber field, I can then insert a cross reference to the
bookmark, and have it fill the number in. Voila, this was the link i was
looking for!

many many thanks!

Regardless of how many numbered lists you have, you should be able to select
the specific numbered paragraph you want to insert a cross reference to. If
you recognize the content of the paragraph, then you'll be cross-referencing
the correct number.

Note that if the numbering depends on fields (other than LISTNUM or
SEQ), it may not be possible to cross-reference it directly; instead,
a bookmark must be created manually and then cross-referenced.
