Default change text color of bullet item

In word 2003 if you changed made sure you highlighted the last element of a
bulleted item or heading and changed the font the bulleted entry would change
as well. In 2007 it is not consistent. I get some headings to gray out but
not others. Also in a table of contents I see if I strike thrue or gray
text the table of contents will never follow.
I need to maintain specifications. It is useful to gray out or cross out an
item that is no longer in effect so as not to change the numbering of all
sections.
I can't believe I am the only one that needs this feature.

I see a strike-through format in the bullets but it's not as visible as what
you see when working with a numbered list. Regarding the font color, if
there is a font color specified for the Bullet then it will keep that font
color and not change. Perhaps this is what you are seeing?

I'm not sure what you are referring to for the table of contents. Can you
clarify what you are seeing?

The TOC is displayed in styles (TOC1, TOC2, etc.) that are completely
different from the text (usually Heading 1 etc.), and neither style settings
nor manual formatting carries into the TOC.

Would it work to use the hide font attribute? The numbers would be retained
but nothing of the items no longer in effect would appear€”as long as show
formatting is off.

1.) If one changes the text in the numbered item the number itself does show
this change. In Word 2003 if I selected up to the very last character the
numbered item would take on the formating of the text. So you could make
some numbered items show strike thru or red.

2.) As for the table of contents. I think I made a mistake. It is showing
the text formatting (color, highlight or strike through). It is the document
map that ignores any formating. This was fooling me into thinking I had not
removed required sections.

I see a strike-through format in the bullets but it's not as visible as what
you see when working with a numbered list. Regarding the font color, if
there is a font color specified for the Bullet then it will keep that font
color and not change. Perhaps this is what you are seeing?

I'm not sure what you are referring to for the table of contents. Can you
clarify what you are seeing?

Not sure what hide font attribute is. But I don't want section to disappear
entirely. What I want is to make it obvious it is has been deleted.

Thanks. Yes, it took me a while to find hidden text. I have never used
it. Search on help in 2007 does not find it. Yes this does work wtih the
added benefit in that it is one format that the document map will listen to.
I would still perfer a solution that would allow it to show as a
placeholder.

This does work for me. Turn your Formatting Marks on (¶ in the Paragraph
group on the Home tab) and make sure you are actually selecting the entire
line. If you have a few spaces after the last character then that would
explain why it's not working. Also, you should select through the Paragraph
Mark instead of just the last character. The easiest way to do this is to
place your mouse to the left of the numbered item, watch for your mouse
appear as an arrow that points to the right, and double-click to select the
entire paragraph.

I overstated things a bit in my comment below. Some manual formatting does
carry into the TOC.
Superscript and strikethrough, for example, carry into the TOC; such
attributes as underscores, font color, and caps case (if applied as a font
attribute) do not. This means you can go with your original idea but must
use, say, strikethrough, instead of the gray font color to indicate the
deletions.

I depend on the TOC not picking up font color, italics, and such and hadn't
noticed any other situations. But yesterday I read an answer from Susanne
that made me check this out more carefully. Sorry for the mistake.

I'm not sure how you're testing this, Pam, but here (Word 2003) any font
formatting that is applied as direct formatting (not defined as part of the
style) is picked up by the TOC. This includes underlines, font color, and
All Caps formatting.

I'm using W2007. I applied different manual formatting to headings and
then regenerated the TOC. Some formatting comes through to the TOC; some
does not.

I have the cut, copy, and paste selections, in Word options, at match
destination formatting and use destination styles. I wonder if that might
have something to do with my results.

This may be a change in Word 2007; I haven't (yet) tested it there. I don't
see how the settings you mention would have any effect on the TOC.
