Default Automatically scaling a line in a footer

I have a line in the footer of my document, but when I change the page
orientation, or page size the line maintains its defined size. Is there a way
of changing the length of the line so that it scales with the size of the
page?

One way to do this is with a table set to autoresize, but reports are that
this consumes a lot of processor power and may promote document corruption.

Perhaps instead of using a graphic line, try putting a border on one side of
the footer paragraph.
