Hi mook-
It depends on the version of Word & the type of image, as well as the nature of the 'background' you want to get rid of. IF a more current version of Word (2002, 2003, not sure about 2000) AND the background is a solid color, you _may_ have succes if you; 1- select the image, 2- make sure the Picture Toolbar is active, 3- use the Set Transparent Color tool on the picture to click the background. Also, if there is a fair amount of the background color in the image you will probably loose that, too. How badly that hurts the appearance will vary. Should the tool not be active or _any_ of the conditions above not be met, JoAnn's reply pretty much sums up your options.
