Default Word 2003 is using the wrong dictionary for spell check

I am using Office 2003 and when I run spell check in word document, I am
getting word correction recommendations that are very wrong. ie., graduate
(word spell recommendation is "graduasse"

This could be caused by the text being marked as a language other than
English. Try this:
1. Open a Word document where this problem occurs.
2. Press Ctrl+A to select all of the text.
3. Click on Tools | Language | Set Language | choose your language |
uncheck the "Do not check spelling or grammar" box | uncheck the "Detect
language automatically" box | Default | OK.
4. Press F7 to rerun spellcheck.

In the tools, language, set language box, both English and French are checked
at the top. English is set as the default - so it does spell check in
English. How can we remove the check in front of French?
