Default Expanding page numbers uncontrollable

I open my file which contains a Word table which is actually 26 pages in
length. However, once opened the pages just keep expanding and right now I'm
up to 6123 and still going! Why is this happening and how do I stop it?

Is it because the table is too large for Word and should be in an Excel
spreadsheet instead?

Looking forward to some assistance.

This is typically a sign of a corrupt document. See
