Default Word 2003 document does not show spelling errors

I am using office 2003 and have a word document that does not show any
spelling or grammar errors underlined in red or green. I checked and the
check spelling and grammar as you type is turned on. Actually it does
underline misspelled words in other documents. If I highlight the whole
document and tell it to spell check it says "done". Even if I deliberately
put in a spelling error it does not show up. Is there a way that I can turn
the automatic spell check back on in this document?

Your text is tagged as "do not check spelling and grammar," probably.
Select all, go to Tools | Language, select the right language and make sure
the "do not check s&g" box is unchecked.

I'm having the same problem. The "do not check" box is untagged; and the
proofing tools are set to check spelling. Still, the underlining doesn't
show up. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Did you note the point in Daiya's reply pertaining to Language? Language
settings in a Word document are a formatting attribute, so if the text is
formatted as a Language different from what the Spell Checker is set for it
doesn't get checked. This can quite easily happen if content is copied from
elsewhere - the Language formatting is pasted in along with the text.

Try Ctrl+A, Tools Language, select the appropriate Language (such as
English U.S.) then run another spell check.

And in the future please don't post a question as a REPLY to another post...
especially one that's as old as this thread is - it goes back more than 3
years. It's more beneficial for you to post a NEW question stating all
particulars about your situation - most definitely so if the solution
provided for the original poster did not work for you.
