Default Word 2002 program freezes when I try to do a "save as" on new doc

I am unable to "save as" when creating a new document. In other words, I
can't create any new Documents in Word. I can open a previously created doc,
but cannot update it and save it. Program freezes and I get "Program not
responding."
I have removed Word and reinstalled it but problem persists. Appreciate any
help that someone has to offer.

See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/918165 "Problems in Windows
Explorer or the Windows shell after you install security update
MS06-015".
