I cannot insert page numbers into my documents as Page Numbers under Insert
is not 'active' i.e. pale not bold

Is the document displayed in Web Layout view? If so, you need to
switch to Normal or Print Layout view (found on the View menu); then
you'll be allowed to insert page numbers.

But note that it is preferable to place the page number directly
in the header or footer; see
