Default check box and edit text

Word 2003

I have a table with check boxes in the first column and "items required" in
the second column. I have protected the form so that users can open the
document in Word and click the box next to the items they require for their
particular project. All is working fine.

Now the users want an additional row in the table with a check box for
"other" where they can type in any additional items not already on the list.

In order for users to click the check box and have it marked, I have to
protect the form. But in order for them to be able to type additional
information, the form has to be unprotected.

I'm obviously missing something critical to this process of having check
boxes AND additional text in a Word document. Can you help??

With either version a text form field to accept user input would seem to be
the way forward. In order to allow free expression in a form document you
must insert an unprotected section, however you cannot insert such a section
in a table whilst still having a column in that section protected. ie the
whole row(s) must be protected or unprotected.

Add a text form field next to the Other check box so that users can enter
freeform text.

Thanks so much. Didn't realize that was one of my options. I've got it
now.

Hi Terry,
First, I apologize jumping into another post but I can't send via "NEW",
only "REPLY" as no dialog box appears. I sent you a post earlier today but
now I can't find you in the 7/25/08 area.
My question is this: I have 2007 Home and Student with Mail. In word, when
attempting to "send to" a document only the fax option is availabe. The
"send to" email is "greyed out".
Any help is really appreciated. Thanks!!!

Yes, you have overlooked the Text Form Field. If you insert one you can
limit its size and the number of characters the user may enter. Obviously it
works when Protection is enabled.

Any idea where I can find this in Word 2007? I know I can't just open the
Forms toolbar, so I don't know where to look to have the ability to do all
of this in 2007? The Interactive Guide that normally shows me where to find
things in 2007 when I point to them on the 2003 screen doesn't have an
answer for this one.

Developer tab tools legacy tools. If the developer ribbon is not showing
add it by going to Office button Word options show developer tab in
ribbon.

In Word 2007

Having trouble protecting the form so that users can only click the check
box and enter text in the provided place. When I click the "protect form"
button on the developer ribbon, I set it to only allow the filling out of
the form, but then the button to enable this setting is grayed out.

Never mind. I had to come out of design mode for the button to become
