Default How do I unrestrict selected columns in a protected document?

I need help setting up a checklist where only three coulmns thru out the
checklist can be updated. The rest of the document I want to be protected.
How do I go about doing this? The proctect tab for my program says I can
check off sections of the checklist to be unprotected, but it won't let me
specify specific sections like a column.

Sorry, in any version of Word before 2003, this can't be done at all. In
those versions, you can only protect or unprotect a whole section, and you
can't put section breaks inside a table.

In Word 2003 you can protect the whole document, and then select the three
columns and allow editing for them.
