Default what's the best way to offset print a word doc? Export to diff pro

I would like to print a book in which the content is in Word. Traditionally,
we've imported the text into a Quark document, but then have to
re-format/style the charts.... Indesign handles charts better, but hard to
"customize" the look of the charts.
Can a word document be sent directly to offset print with no problems?
(We've had lots of trouble in the past.) Word is NOT made for this purpose,
but we're trying to educate ourselves! thanks!
