A picutre is inserted into Word, it appears on the screen and can be
formatted including layout. However when the screen is scrolled so that the
picture scrolls off the page it is erased from the screen. Clicking on it
displays the handlebars but no picture. A reset will sometimes cause the
picture to reappear, but not always. New computer WinXP, ATI Radeon X800XL
video card with dual monitors

This problem is usually a sign of an overworked graphics card or
out-of-date video drivers. I'm sure the X800XL isn't overworked :-)
but make sure you have the latest driver set -- visit
https://support.ati.com/ics/support/...ge&folderID=27
for the Catalyst 6.4 version, which was released about six weeks ago.

In the meantime, you may be able to work around the problem by
reducing the hardware acceleration setting in Windows: go to Start
Settings Control Panel Display Settings Advanced
Troubleshoot and move the slider toward the left.
