How To Get Rid Of Smart Tags Permanently, Forever And Ever, Amen.....
Are you getting documents from others? Smart tags can be saved in specific
documents even if you have them disabled in your setup. -- Suzanne S. Barnhill Microsoft MVP (Word) Words into Type Fairhope, Alabama USA Word MVP FAQ site: http://word.mvps.org Email cannot be acknowledged; please post all follow-ups to the newsgroup so all may benefit. "Bright Spark" wrote in message ... I had no problem with Smart Tags until I moved over to a "new" computer about a month ago. The new computer has Win XP, Service Pack 2. I would like to blame SP2 for what is happening, but I don't really know if that's my problem. No matter what I do, I cannot get rid of the wretched Smart Tags. I have replaced my Normal.dot template time after time after time (I am familiar with backing up the normal template and acl files, etc.), and after every couple of computer reboots, the damned Smart Tags come back and I have to start all over again. I have changed every single Smart Tag possibility in Tools/Options/Save/AutoCorrect/AutoFormat, etc over and over and over, and they still keep coming back. It's beginning to make me crazy and I'm hoping someone may have an answer as to why it keeps coming back and taking over my Normal.dot again. Thanks for any help. Bright Spark |

But when another users opens the documents, they will be using their own

Which Smart Tag is it that is giving you grief and why is it a problem? -- Terry Farrell - Word MVP http://word.mvps.org/ "Bright Spark" wrote in message ... : Hi, Suzanne -- yes, I am getting documents from others, but these are : documents that I have provided to them as a "shell" to use as : "templates" (although they are not saved as .dot, just .doc) for them : to just insert certain items - i.e., these documents were originally : prepared by me, which would presumably be using MY normal.dot? : : Bright Spark : : : : : On Fri, 24 Jun 2005 22:26:55 -0500, "Suzanne S. FWIW, you don't have to see them even when they're there. It was recently
brought to my attention that there's a check box for that on the View tab of Tools | Options. But I sympathize with your desire to eradicate them; they add to the file size and cause Word to prompt you to save when you haven't changed anything. -- Suzanne S. I was afraid of that -- but then if it reverts to the other person's normal.dot when they open it, why doesn't it then also revert back to my normal.dot when I open it again after they have sent it back to me? It's any and all Smart Tags, and it's a problem because I don't want them and I can't seem to get rid of them. I take it that you have been to Tools, AutoText, SmartTags tab and cleared
all the check boxes? Then with the template open, have you clicked on the Check Document option (on the same Smart Tags page)? Also, are you sending these to other users using Outlook or are they opening them from a common network drive? The reason these keep cropping up again is that it is the Grammar checker that is marking the Smart Tags and need to be cleared from the document using the ToolsRecheckSmartTags tool. Hi Bright Spark,
MS Smart Tags show up from a number of sources and can be loaded through a number of DLL and other programmatic methods in Word 2003. Even going to Add/Remove Programs in Windows and removing the Smart Tag Plugin install items may not clear them all. What may work is locating the folder on your PC Drive:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Smart Tag and changing the name of the folder to Drive:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Smart Tag-OFF then start Word and see if that help get you to a new day. ======= "Bright Spark" wrote in message news Thanks, Terry -- yes, I have been to all those places and back again and again! Everything to do with Smart Tags has been well and truly unchecked on all those tabs and pages. My version has "remove Smart Tags" and everything to do with grammar checking has been removed/unchecked also. I don't use Outlook at all for anything -- The documents are exchanged over ftp. It just appears I am fated to live in this Groundhog Day with Smart Tags! Thanks anyway.
