Default Why would "Record New Macro" be disabled?

In a new document, when I try to record a macro, the "Record New Macro" iteme
on the menu pad is disabled. Does anyone know why?

Try the generic fix for Word: close Word, find Normal.DOT and delete it. It
will be recreated when you reopen Word. Make sure your Folder Options view is
set to show all files and extensions.

NO! Always *rename* normal.dot, then if the 'fix' doesn't work, you can
restore your original settings.
