Default Hide index entries from view

Office/Word 2003 SP1 on Windows 2000 Professional

When working with a document containing index entries - {XE "index this"}-
sometimes the entries will suddenly appear in the text (in Normal and Print
Layout, but not Reading Layout). Show/Hide Formatting Marks has no affect on
this. Sometimes I can save and re-open and the index markers will then be
hidden (for a while), but is there a "Show/hide" menu option or button for
this?

XE fields are Hidden text. You should be able to control them using the
Show/Hide ΒΆ button (unless "Hidden text" is specifically checked on the View
tab of Tools | Options), but they will reappear when you add another XE
field (in any version) or when you open the file (in Word 2003) if you have
"Make hidden markup visible when opening or saving" checked on the Security
tab of Tools | Options.

Look in the Tools Options View dialog, in the Formatting Marks section.
There are separate checkboxes for various items, including "Hidden text",
and there's an "All" checkbox. The Show/Hide button toggles only the "All"
box. If the "Hidden text" box is separately checked, then the toggle won't
have any effect on whether hidden text is displayed -- and that's what the
XE fields are. Make sure all of those boxes are cleared, and then the
Show/Hide button will behave as expected.
