Default How do I type a complement in MS Word?

I am trying to type a character with a bar over it in MS Word (Times New
Roman, 12-point font). I know that you can go Insert -- Field, click on "Eq"
and insert a Field that looks like this: EQ \O(x,¯)

This works OK with small characters like x and n, but if I want, for
example, an M-complement, the bar is not wide enough to stretch the entire
length of the M character. I know that I can expand the width of the
character in the Format -- Font -- Character Spacing menu, but for some
reason when expanded, the width of the overbar character does not change like
it should.

Can anybody show me an adequate solution for this?

See http://sbarnhill.mvps.org/WordFAQs/Overbar.htm for other methods.
