Default "[" appears in word doc...

I created a word doc containing data that I need for a project. I use Word
2003. Later when I opened the document again to edit, I find that the "[" and
"]" appear at a lot of places. I am not able to delete them also. Any one can
help me with this? This is an important doc and I need to get rid of this
asap.

Thx
