Default How do I stop needing to 'exit design mode' whenever I open docume

I've edited a document, and have made changes including inserting check
boxes, using the control toolbox. However, whenever I save and close the
document, and re-open it later, I need to 'exit design mode' again before
being able to tick the check boxes.
How can I save the document in a way that once I've exited design mode, I
don't need to do it again each time the document is opened?
Thanks
