I can't delete words/phrases anymore by highlighting and pressing backspace.
Now, I have to hit the "delete" key instead. Also if I highlight a sentence
and copy/paste in another sentence, the original sentence still remains.
Does anyone know why this is or how I can fix it?

In Tools Options Edit, check "Typing replaces selection".
