Default "Microsoft Office Word has stopped working."

This message has now begun appearing when I'm finished for the day and
close the last open document. It offers two choices: Reopen program,
or Go on line and reopen program (or something like that). I simply
close the box.

Something to do with the "updates" installed the other day?

No, none of those refer to a message seen after closing the last open
document.

It is still worth trying the suggestions in the article. For example, you
may want to start Word in Safe mode and see if you still get the error
message.

If I knew when it was going to show up, I might be able to figure out
why it was there. I might leave a document open for several days. (I
save very frequently.)

So you are saying that it happens intermittently? That certainly makes

Default "Microsoft Office Word has stopped working."

A document left open for several days and saved frequently will generate a
huge slew of temporary files (one for each save), and this alone might cause
the problem.

I don't believe the cause of these temp files is actually documented
anywhere. They are of the type ~$wrlxxx.tmp, which the KB
(http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211632) says are associated with the
Clipboard, so perhaps they are not generated unless you have copied
something, but I can attest that, if you have "Automatically create backup
copy" enabled, in at least some instances the first save (Save As) will
create the file, the second save will result in a *.wbk file, and every
subsequent save will result in an additional ~$wrlxxx.tmp file. You can
actually open these files, and they are previous versions of the document.
They are all deleted when you close the document (or should be; there have
been some situations where they are not, and that causes a further problem).

The KB article does include this, which might explain the files:

"Text Pasted Between Files (Same Directory as Source File):

"When Word copies and pastes between documents, it may create a temporary
file in the same directory as the source file. This is especially true if
the source file is saved or closed. The temporary file represents the
information that was referenced by the Clipboard prior to saving the file.
Word creates this temporary file by renaming the old copy of the file to a
temporary file name."

Another problem with leaving a document open for extended periods is the
accumulation of the Undo stack. Moral to the story is to periodically close
and reopen the file.

No, I don't have Automatic Backups. I do on occasion drag'n'drop, say,
a bibliography item from one document to another -- but I normally
have the source document open only during the copying operation.

I didn't mean to imply that you get the temp files only if you have
automatic backups enabled. What I meant is that, if you have that option
enabled, you don't get one until after you get the first .wbk file. If you
don't have it enabled, presumably you'd get one the second time you saved. I
would suggest that you look in the folder where the document is stored,
setting "Files of type" to "All Files" and see whether you see such temp
files.

Just mentioning it to rule out a variable. No visible temp files at
all in Windows Explorer, if the way to see them is to check Show
Hidden Files.

None in the Open window within Word, with All Files showing.

Right, good. But you did say that you sometimes left a document open for

a bibliography item from one document to another -- but I normally
have the source document open only during the copying operation.

I don't believe the cause of these temp files is actually documented
anywhere. They are of the type ~$wrlxxx.tmp, which the KB
(http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211632) says are associated with
the
Clipboard, so perhaps they are not generated unless you have copied
something, but I can attest that, if you have "Automatically create
backup
copy" enabled, in at least some instances the first save (Save As)
will
create the file, the second save will result in a *.wbk file, and
every
subsequent save will result in an additional ~$wrlxxx.tmp file. You
can
actually open these files, and they are previous versions of the
document.
They are all deleted when you close the document (or should be; there
have
been some situations where they are not, and that causes a further
problem).

The KB article does include this, which might explain the files:

"Text Pasted Between Files (Same Directory as Source File):

"When Word copies and pastes between documents, it may create a
temporary
file in the same directory as the source file. This is especially true
if
the source file is saved or closed. The temporary file represents the
information that was referenced by the Clipboard prior to saving the
file.
Word creates this temporary file by renaming the old copy of the file
to
a
temporary file name."

Another problem with leaving a document open for extended periods is
the
accumulation of the Undo stack. Moral to the story is to periodically
close
and reopen the file.

You don't want to delete it; you want to rename it. Instructions for finding
it at http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/...ocNotBlank.htm
