The pilcrow sign is automatically inserted in documents throughout the
document. How do I make it go away?

Click on it in the standard toolbar, or go to Tools | Options and the View
tab to uncheck paragraph marks etc.

Click on the pilcrow icon (¶) in the Standard toolbar
or
Select Tools Options View tab and uncheck the "Paragraph marks" and
"All" check boxes, clik OK.

You'll see one more pilcrow on the toolbar, as the symbol on the
Show/Hide button. Click it (again) -- or use the shrotcut for it,
Ctrl+Shift+8.
