Whenever I open a document from my C: drive (already verified to be virus
free), Word 2003 runs a virus scan which can take many seconds to complete.
Do I have the option of turning off this feature? If so, how?

Word isn't doing the scanning. If you're using Norton AntiVirus,
disable its Office Plug-in.
