Default Word changes the format when inserting a file onto a document

When trying to insert a file onto an existing document, word changes the
format of the file (word document) to be inserted..i.e. borders, columns,
headers, footers, into a plain document...how can I stop it from
happenning..I want the inserted files to remain exactly the same..
Many thanks
