Default "Available Styles" in Styles and Formatting Pane - how to control

In Word 2003 SP3, On Win XP SP3...

Is it possible, when attaching an alternate template to an existing
document, to view ONLY the Styles associated with the new template, so that
conversion to the new Styles is unambiguous?

It seems that no matter what we try, Styles which are part of the source
document, ALSO appear in the Styles and Formatting pane, in addition to those
defined in the newly-attached template.

We would like to only have the Styles associated with the new template
appear in the pane, so that our document editors are not confused as to the
appropriate Styles to apply when making revisions to legacy documents.

It seems as though the template gets merged with attributes from whatever
document the template gets atached to. Once the new template is attached to
the document, the option to "Automatically update document styles" is
checked. This changes much of the legacy document immediately, but for
efficient conversion to the Styles specified in the new attached template, we
would like to only see the Styles of the template in the Styles and
Formatting pane.

Is there a way to limit the Available Styles, or All Styles, drop down
options in the pane to show ONLY those of the attached template???
