Default highlighting and writing over a word has changed

I can't highlight a word and then just write over it anymore. The highlighted
word stays there in addition to my new text. How can I change that setting
back?

Click on Tools - Options. Then, on the Edit tab, click "Typing Replaces
Selection."

I hope this helps.

In Word, click on Tools | Options | Edit | check the "Typing
replaces selection" box | OK.
