Default AutoCorrect in Word 2007

Please help - Why is the AutoCorrect list not working in Word 2007 when I set
my language to English UK?
When you go to Word options, Proofing, AutoCorrect Options, Autocorrect tab
- there is only a list of symbols. However, mysteriously, when the language
is changed from English UK to English US, the list populates. How do I get
the list to work with English UK as I would like this as my default?

What you are describing may happen with languages for which proofing tools
aren't installed, but it shouldn't happen with UK English, which (if I
remember correctly) is always installed when US English is (and vice versa).

Hi Stefan,

How would I go about fixing or checking this?

Click the Review tab of the ribbon. Click Set Languages. Installed languages
have a check mark next to them.

If you find that UK English is in fact installed, you could try repairing
the installation (Office button | Word Options, Resources category; click
the Diagnose button).

Hi Stefan. Thanks for your reply. The installed languages were OK and the
diagnostics came back all OK so I did a bit more research on internet. I
found the following work around which worked a treat

AutoCorrects are held in "..acl" files - one per language. If an .acl file
does not exist when needed, Word will create a new one - there seems to be a
glitch with the English UK version. If you don't have anything you want to
keep in the English UK file then the easiest thing to do is to copy the
English US one and rename it with the English UK filename:

The files should be located in:
(on Vista) - C:\Users\(userid)\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Office OR
(on XP) - C:\Documents and Settings\(userid)\Application
Data\Microsoft\Office

Rename MSO2057.acl as MSO2057.old (perhaps) - this is the English UK file.
Take a copy of MSO1033.acl (the English US file) and rename the copy as
MSO2057.acl

Voila!!

I'm glad you got it sorted. I should have mentioned that AutoCorrect entries
are stored in separate files (the exception is *formatted* AutoCorrect
entries which reside in the Normal template). However, note that the
*predefined* entries will be different for different languages, and
therefore replacing one *.acl file with another may not always be the best
approach.
