Default word doc keeps counting up

Each time I open Word it shows "document #"...Even if I save it, the next
time I open Word it shows as "document #+1". How do i return it to document
1?

Just curious - why is that important to you. The doc number is just a
reference number and will change all together once you save the file. Again,
just curious to know why that's important to you. Maybe I have missed a
benefit of renumbering to #1. Thanks !

This usually results from having temp files left open. Restarting Windows is
usually required to release all these temp files and allow Word to start at
1 again. (I'm like you--it drives me crazy to start with Document2,
Document3, etc.)
