Default e-mail hyperlink opens over 50 IE browser windows!

When clicking on an e-mail hyperlink in word (I believe it's word 2003), over
50 IE browser windows opens rather than opening a single e-mail window. This
only occurs with e-mail hyperlinks. Web hyperlinks opens a single IE browser
and links to the correct address.
OS is Windows XP SP2 - Everything is updated in Windows, Office and
antivirus program. No virus. Firewall works.
Word was pre-installed on her computer as part of the Microsoft Works
package that came with the computer.

Does this happen with ANY hyperlink, or only to a specific website?

It only happens with e-mail hyperlinks. Rather than opening Outlook, it opens
over IE 50 windows. There is of course no connection to a website.

What addresses show in the IE window address bars? Have you checked the code
behind the e-mail hyperlinks? A link that *displays* as an email address
might well be linked to something else altogether.

Its the e-mail address that was in the e-mail hyperlink that shows up in all
the IE Window addresses bar. Not sure how to check the €code€ behind the
e-mail hyperlink. Could you explain that? I do, however, have a hard time
seeing that there would be something else other than an e-mail address. This
problems also occurs when I write the e-mail address. It makes no difference
what e-mail address is in the hyperlink €“ the same thing happens. Hyperlinks
with actual web addresses do, however work. Its only the e-mail hyperlinks
that cause this type of behavior.
