Default Embedded Excel table in Word shows incorrect symbols

I used to embed an Excel table into a Word doc with symbols in cells (both of
2000 version). We changed to Office 2003 and the symbols show incorrectly,
they turn into squares or some non-sense characters.

I tried redo the cell in Excel and then copy it into the embedded Excel
table inside my Word doc. The symbols shows correctly when the embedded Excel
is opened in Word, but not correctly when the focus left the table.

Thanks in advance for any help.
