Word changes alphanumeric characters to wingdings font, inside pic
Using Word 2007, a compatability mode document has several figure-captioned
pictures. When printed, one picture has some, but not all, of its alphanumeric characters (appearing in the picture) changed to wingding font characters. Converted the Word file to a PDF file, and the wingdings showed up in the picture in the PDF file, too. The font surrounding the picture is Arial. -- Zane Lassiter Haiku Master |

Word changes alphanumeric characters to wingdings font, inside pic
Hi Zane,
So this is text that is part of the graphic, rather than something in the caption and the problem does not show up in Word or in Print Preview? What format is the source graphic and how are you inserting it into Word? What languages are active in the document? Do you have a blog/space/online file area/web page/etc. where you could put an example of the problem graphic and Word document? By the way, several of the regulars here are Haiku fans, in case (from your signature) you have a favorite you might like to share with them. ============== "Zane Lassiter" wrote in message ... Bob,
1. Text is part of graphic - embedded in graphic. Problem does NOT show in Word doc, but DOES show in print preview, on printed page, and in converted PDF doc. 2. Source graphic is a drawing exported from AutoCAD as metafile (.WMF). Inserted as picture, in Word. 3. Only language is English. 4. Sorry, presently no way to post file online. Actually, it's a "sensitive" file (DoD/USAF/etc). 5. Will post haiku in a later iteration. Thanks! Bob, please advise if you have further questions. Here's a traditional (5-7-5
syllables) haiku: Reticent people backed into a corner are highly explosive. -- Zane Lassiter Haiku Master "Zane Lassiter" wrote: Bob, 1. Text is part of graphic - embedded in graphic. Word changes alphanumeric characters to wingdings font, inside
Hi Zane,
Without a sample to go by this is somewhat general It's possible that there's a font mismatch somewhere, an add-in that's conflicting or older versioned. I've tried inserting some AutoCAD generated .WMF files and converted some .DWGs to using http://irfanview.com and using both the Word 2007 save as PDF and separate tools to print to XPS or PDF I don't get the change in font. What fonts are you using in your drawings in AutoCAD and are all of those fonts also available in Word 2007? When you insert the .WMF into Word (Insert=Picture=From File) if you right click on the inserted graphic and choose 'Edit Picture' are there any Font substitutions then listed if you go to Office Button=Word Options=Advanced=Show Document Content=[Font Substitutions] ? Is it necessary that the inserted graphic be in WMF? There are conversion products but also a couple of things you can try in AutoCAD ============= "Zane Lassiter" wrote in message ... Bob, 1. Word changes alphanumeric characters to wingdings font, inside
Bob,
I'm checking with the AutoCAD fellow on what fonts are used in our drawings. At Office Button=Word Options=Advanced=Show Document Content, I click 'Font Substitution...' and nothing! With the dot-dot-dot trailer and Microsoft convention, I expect something to follow - window, dialog box, drop-down list, something. Is this normal? Does it indicate no font substitution? Try copying the drawing, deleting it, and then pasting it back as an enhanced
metafile. Because you'll then have a static image, the font problem should be gone. Sometimes this doesn't work well in Word, and you'll have to produce a jpeg, or some such, in another porgram. Hi PamC,
Would you break it down for me - ID source and target for each step and where action takes place, e.g. in AutoCAD or in Word. Specifically, are you saying: Copying from AutoCAD to Word? (Not insert?) Copying from file saved/exported from AutoCAD, to Word? (Not insert?) Delete picture in Word? Paste into Word from where? Hi Zane,
If, after using the 'Edit Picture' choice, when you then click on the [Font Substitution] button you should get a response dialog that shows either (a) 'No font substitution is necessary. All fonts used in the document are available' or (b) a list of the substitutions. ================ "Zane Lassiter" wrote in message ... Sorry to be late answering, I've been away for a few days. My suggestion is
an emergency fix when you can't get to the native file. While in Word, copy the drawing, delete it, and then pasting it back into the same spot as an enhanced metafile. I suggested that you "try" it because sometimes (rarely for me) the parts of the image will shift unacceptably. For me that means going back to the artist and asking him/her to make a jpeg. I prefer to use static images because of problems like you describe. I get neither. I right-click on picture, choose Edit Picture, then at Office Button=Word Options=Advanced=Show Document Content, I click the 'Font Substitution...' button. No response dialog.
