Default get rid of red underlined letters in text

I was typing along in a Word document (2003) and suddenly I'm getting red
underlined letters. I hadn't hit anything on the toolbar or upper keys that
I am aware of. I don't want to try hitting various keys and settings at
random and maybe create more problems. How do I get rid of this and get back
to regular text?

Thumbs up Answer: get rid of red underlined letters in text

The red underlined letters in your Word document indicate that the words are misspelled or not recognized by the program's dictionary. Here's how you can get rid of them:
  1. Right-click on the underlined word. A menu will appear.
  2. Look for the correct spelling of the word in the menu. If you see it, click on it and the red underline will disappear.
  3. If you don't see the correct spelling in the menu, click on "Add to Dictionary" to add the word to your personal dictionary. This will prevent Word from flagging it as misspelled in the future.
  4. If you want to turn off the red underlines altogether, go to the "Review" tab in the top menu and click on "Spelling & Grammar." In the dialog box that appears, uncheck the box next to "Check spelling as you type." This will turn off the red underlines for all misspelled words in your document.

Press Ctrl+Shift+E to turn off Track Changes. And to remove the
tracked changes that are currently in your document, click on
"Accept All Changes" on the Reviewing toolbar.

Thanks for the info - I turned off the Track Changes. I didn't know where the
Reviewing toolbar was, but I found it and did the second part also. So now I
know something new.
