Default I can't open old Word files with Word 2003

Whenever I try to open a Word 2000 file after installing Office 2003, I get
message saying the file is not available. Also, when I try to close Word
2003, I get message about replacing the existing Normal file.

Disable the Office Plugin that comes with Symantec/Norton AntiVirus.
See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329820 "How to use Office
programs with the Norton AntiVirus Office plug-in" for more information.
