Default Table of Contents - Entire Paragraph Displayed

After making adjustments to a lease document that was "inherited" from a law
firm (Word 97-2002) I wanted to update the page numbers in the existing table
of contents. When I did so, Word told me a TOC does not exist. Although I can
start fresh and insert a new TOC, I routinely get the entire paragraph in the
table of contents rather than just the headers and the page numbers. The
hidden TOC fields show only the header - not the entire paragraph. I've never
had this problem with Word before. What switch am I missing? Deleting prior
hidden codes and starting over has not solved the problem. Advice?

I suspect that the TOC is picking up heading styles rather than TC fields.
In the TOC Options dialog, make sure that "Table entry fields" is checked
and "Styles" is not (or at least that the numbers are removed from the
styles in question).

Wonderful. That did the trick. Thanks so much!
