Default When showing paragraph marks, what does the back arrow mean?

I'm editing a document created by someone else. When I use the Show/Hide
feature to see the paragraph and tab marks, there is a symbol at the end of
some lines that I do not understand. It looks like it might mean Line Feed/
Carriage Return. It is a back arrow with a short vertical tail. What does it
mean? How can I use generate them?

Thanks

That is a line break symbol. You can "use generate them" by
pressing Shift+Enter.

See http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/NonPrintChars.htm for more
information on all the formatting marks.
