Default Hidden Hdr/Ftr - using Print Layout - Not white sp prob

No problem with displaying or printing headers yesterday. Today, they
display only if markup is displayed. I restored yesterday's document,
but same problem. I am using the Print Layout in the View menu. In the
OptionsView tab, White Spaces is checked. The document has no sections.

If I display the document with markup, the hdr/ftr displays. If I select
ViewHeader and Footer, the header is available for editing, and the
text body is grayed out. If I then switch to display Final w/o Markup,
there is no hdr/ftr, the text body is still grayed out, and the View
menu shows Header and Footer is still selected. When I click on the
latter, the text body shows normally. Clicking on the ViewHeader and
Footer again sends me to the top of the document, there is no header,
and the text is available for editing.

Sighhhhhhhhhhh! Charlie Brown and I need help.

Just a thought - but if your header is not there in the Final version but is
there when showing markup, perhaps it has been deleted. Depending on how
deletions are flagged it could show as you report. I can't think of any
other reason.

Thanks for the reply, Tony, but ...

I assumed that was the problem, and tried to create a new header.
Unfortunately, Word will not open the editable Header and Footer display
when I click on that item in the View menu.

To make sure, I just entered "xxx" in the first line of the document.
The change appears in the Final with and without markup, so it's the
same document.

Other observations that didn't help me, but might help more experienced
people:
1) The problem does not exist in other documents or in a new document.
2) Document protection has Protect Changes selected, and won't let me
change it. The document is not protected.
3) ToolsViewText boundaries - The boundaries expand and contract to
include the header and footers with and w/o markup.
4) The same problem exists when I took the document to another computer.

If the document is protected for changes, this would explain some of the
problem, I think. Are you prompted for a password when you try to unprotect
it?

Thanks for replying.

I don't think the document has ever been protected. When I now click on
ToolsProtect Document, the following dialogue box is displayed
* Tracked changes [* = a selected bullet]
Comments [ Unselected bullet]
Forms [ Unselected bullet]
Password (Optional)
_________________

If I click OK (w/o password), I get the Final with markup view and the
header and footer are available for editing. If I now change to Final
(w/o markup), I cannot edit or print the header. I then clicked on
ToolsUnprotect document, and the Header is still unavailable.

** UPDATE - BREAKTHROUGH **
(Please excuse the shouting.)

I was going to offer sending you the first two pages to scrutinize if
you were so inclined. I decided to test the two pages first to ensure
the failure was exhibited. When I copied the first two pages, the
failure failed to fail! The Header and Footer were available for
creation/editing.

After copying various groups of pages with failures and successes, I
discovered there was a section break just before the first page of the
main body to facilitate changing page numbering from i, ii, iii followed
by 1, 2, 3. I went to the second page of the second section, and created
the header. Viola!

Thanks for the assistance. I am impressed by the skill and helpfulness
of the MVPs. During my research the last three days, I have found, and
bookmarked, several pages of technical assists especially in the areas
of Sections, Styles, and Numbering.
