Default How do I create an IF THEN field in Word.

I am trying to use an "IF - THEN" field from a number that is entered. I
can not get it to work using the online help...

ie - When the document is opened, you have to enter a number. I'd like an
area on the document to print x1 if the number entered is 400, if the number
entered =400 the suffix should be x2. If the number entered is 400 then
x3..... etc....
