Default styles--spacing

You're not supposed to use the paragraph mark for spacing, right? So you
have to create a style for everything you want to do in a document? So there
is a Title style for the cover page, and a sub title style, etc?

Why is it so important not to use a paragraph break? I know each paragraph
mark holds a lot of info--so how do I avoid using it?

You avoid using the Enter key for spacing by using paragraph formatting
instead. In a simple document, you don't need a style for every variation in
formatting, you can use direct formatting. It is just that in templates, all
formatting should be done using styles; in documents that will be heavily
edited or passed around, using styles is also a very good idea.
