Cross References disappear when updated

Default Cross References disappear when updated

Please help!
I am using cross references to reference figures and tables in the text. I
use "insert/cross reference/figure" to enter a figure label and number in the
However, when I update the references using F9 or select all/F9, lots of
them disappear instead of updating.

Does anyone know how I can stop this?
